ORTHOKERATOLOGY (OK)

Correct your vision safely while you sleep!  This procedure uses special contact lenses worn only at night that gently change the shape of the cornea to correct vision -- think of them as retainers for the eye.  When removed in the morning, the patient's vision remains clear with no need for glasses or contacts throughout the day.  The procedure is non-permanent and if discontinued the patients eyes return to pretreatment condition.  There are several designs of orthokeratology lenses available, with the two most widely known being Paragon's “Corneal Refractive Therapy” (CRT) and Bausch and Lomb's “Dreamlens.”

Orthokeratology is safe and FDA-approved to correct myopia (nearsightedness).  The procedure originated in the 1960s with the advent of hard contact lenses, and modern technology has greatly increased the effectiveness and reduced side effects.  The introduction of computer-aided design and manufacturing allows microscopic manufacturing tolerances required for modern, consistent results.  Ocular health with the procedure is greatly improved with the introduction of space-age polymers, allowing high amounts of oxygen transmission through the lens.

FDA training and certification is required to be certified to fit overnight Orthokeratology Lenses, as fitting the reverse geometry lenses used in modern OK do not follow traditional contact lens fitting methods. Because of this difference, the FDA restricts the use of these lenses to only those doctors that have been specially trained in their use. Most Optometrists do not fit orthokeratology lenses, but Dr. Bloomberg is FDA-certified in OK and has fit hundreds of patients thrilled with their results.
